About Clans

In the world of gaming, whether its for PC or console games, a number of gamers will sometimes form units or groups called Gaming Clans. These clans, usually formed by a bunch of friends or as big as a thousand members all over the world, tend unite under a common banner, generally for a single game. There are tightly-knit gaming clans that tend to continue their existence even if the game they formed under becomes obsolete, and just find other games to play. There are also clans that play several games simultaneously.

Clan structures will vary amongst different gaming clans, but as a de facto standard, all clans will have a leader. Depending on its size, some bigger clans will have a leader and several co-leaders or assistant clan leaders. With some of the smaller, more personal clans, these co-leaders usually consist of the leaders close friends or relatives, but in large, more professional gaming clans, the co leaders tend to be promoted to the position based on their performance in the game, or their popularity with the clan.

The motive for the formation of gaming clans is originally to translate real world groupings or clubs into videogames’ more virtual aspect, or for friends to be able to help each other and socialize even in the virtual world. However, the advent of online gaming has lead to formations of clans where the motives may vary, from the desire to reach a higher virtual social status or to socialize with other gamers.
